Experience Design 2 (Fall 2022)

Experience Design 2 is an advanced undergraduate course for design and combined majors. My Fall 2022 class explored design for and with the body in an attempt to imagine a richer, more human, future of body-based technology.

This course is held in a dance studio and outdoor locations to facilitate body-based design approaches. Students begin from by learning to observe movement and identify design parameters for movement based on the work of Anne Bogart, Eric Franklin, and other artists. In the second project, students design a series of three simple movement experiences inspired by William Forsythe’s Choreographic Objects. Finally, in the third project students develop their own somatic practices through a series of in-class activities and draw on this first person embodied experience to design novel wearable technologies. This approach introduces students to an alternative to the technology-first work that dominates much of computing. It also demonstrates the important role design can play in creating novel, embodied, and culturally engaged technologies.
